Box Office: Inside Out 2 Outgrosses Original Film With $863.1 Million Global Haul

“Inside Out 2” continues to dominate the box office, shattering records as it injects a largely absent feeling of joy into a movie industry that’s been in a prolonged funk.
The Disney and Pixar sequel about the emotional life of a teenage girl has earned $863.1 million globally to overtake the lifetime gross of its predecessor, 2015’s “Inside Out’s” $859 million worldwide haul. It now ranks as the 19th highest-grossing animated film in history on a global basis after 16 days of release, and it should keep climbing up the chart. At its current clip, “Inside Out 2” seems poised to cross the $1 billion mark, becoming the first film of 2024 to reach those lofty heights.

What makes “Inside Out 2’s” performance so notable is that it comes as the global box office has shrunk considerably. Geopolitical tensions with China have made Hollywood movies less popular in the country, while Russia is largely off limits to studio movies because of the war in Ukraine. The domestic box office has also struggled to rebound from COVID, with ticket sales lagging behind 2023’s numbers. The writers and actors strikes halted production and delayed the release of many movies, leaving theaters with fewer films to show.
Heading into the weekend, “Inside Out 2” will get fresh challengers in the form of Paramount’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Horizon,” a big-budget Western from Kevin Costner that Warner Bros. is distributing.
